Treat Your Brand Like a Product, Not a Project

Jan 2026· 5 min

Most companies treat branding as a project. You hire an agency, they hand you a deck, and you're "done." Then the brand starts to rot — assets get misused, the visual language drifts, and the identity feels dated.

We treat brands as products — living systems that evolve continuously. Here's the framework we use.

Brand Foundations: The Non-Negotiables

Every brand needs a core that doesn't change: purpose, values, personality, and differentiation. These are the North Star. Everything else — colors, typography, tone — can evolve around them.

We've seen too many brands change their foundations every few years, confusing customers and frustrating teams. Pick your foundations carefully and commit to them.

Evolving the Expression

While the foundations stay constant, the expression of the brand should evolve. That might mean refreshing the visual identity, updating the tone of voice, or adapting to new channels.

We recommend a regular brand audit — annually at minimum — to assess what's working, what's dated, and what's inconsistent. Then we make targeted improvements, not wholesale changes.

Brand as a System, Not a Document

The best brand guidelines are living systems, not static PDFs. We use tools like Figma to create component-based brand systems that designers can actually use. The brand is embedded in the design system, not locked in a document on a server.

When a brand is treated as a product, it becomes more useful, more adopted, and more resilient over time.
